Welcome! I am Moses Adonu, Founder and Executive Director of The Tears of Young Orphans Shall Stop International (TYOSSI). Our mission is to restore hope to vulnerable orphans, street children, and young people in the Ada East District of Ghana, West Africa.

TYOSSI offers volunteers something no other organisation in Ghana can match — traditional wooden boat journeys from our volunteer house to island school construction and community project sites on the Volta estuary. Come and work with us in one of Ghana's most beautiful and most underserved regions.

OUR VOLUNTEER ROLES

1. School and Clinic Construction and Renovation

Help build and renovate classrooms, clinic buildings, toilet blocks, and school facilities serving orphans and vulnerable children in Ada Foah and on the Volta estuary islands. Work includes block-laying, plastering, painting, interior and exterior decoration, and general renovation.

Our partner schools currently include Anyakpor R/C Basic School, Gorm D/A Basic School, Big Ada D/A Basic School, and Luhoese D/A Basic School. Our partner clinics include Foah Clinic, Adedetsekope Clinic, and Kaseh Clinic.

No prior construction experience is necessary. All tools, materials, and supplies are provided by TYOSSI. Qualified local tradespeople supervise all building work on site.

2. Classroom Teaching Support

Assist qualified local Ghanaian teachers with English language and Mathematics at primary and junior secondary schools in Ada Foah and on the Volta estuary island communities. Volunteers provide one-to-one student support, assist with lesson delivery, and help manage classroom resources.

No teaching qualification is required. All classroom materials are provided by TYOSSI.

3. Island Community Outreach

Travel by traditional wooden boat from the TYOSSI volunteer house to island communities on the Volta estuary — including Azizakpe, Aflive, and Alorkpem — to deliver food, school uniforms, books, and educational supplies to children and families in some of Ghana's most remote and underserved communities.

This experience is unique to TYOSSI. No other volunteer organisation in Ghana reaches these island communities. It is deeply meaningful, unforgettable, and available nowhere else.

WHAT TYOSSI PROVIDES FOR EVERY VOLUNTEER

Airport pickup and drop-off — TYOSSI personally collects you from Kotoka International Airport, Accra on arrival and returns you at departure. Approximately a two-hour drive. Fully arranged and paid by TYOSSI.

Safe, comfortable accommodation at TYOSSI Volunteer House, Solikope, Ada Foah — bedrooms with mosquito nets, running water shower, flush toilet, wash basin, soap, and toilet paper provided.

Three freshly cooked meals every day — breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared daily in the TYOSSI kitchen and served in the volunteer dining hall.

Safe filtered and boiled drinking water at all times — at no extra cost.

All project materials — building supplies, tools, cement, paint, timber, classroom books, stationery, and community outreach supplies. All provided and paid for by TYOSSI.

Daily transport to all project sites — by vehicle to mainland schools, clinics, and community locations, and by traditional wooden boat to island project sites.

24-hour on-site supervision and security — trained TYOSSI staff supervise all project work and a full-time resident security officer lives on site.

Cultural orientation — introduction to Ghanaian culture, local customs, safety guidelines, and basic Ghanaian language lessons on arrival.

Emergency hospital transport — if you suffer any sudden illness or injury, TYOSSI will immediately take you to the nearest major hospital and stay with you until you receive care.

After your working week, explore Ghana's most spectacular destinations. TYOSSI organises and accompanies every tour — all fully included in your programme fee at no extra cost.

Volta Estuary Boat Tour, Azizakpe Island and Maranatha Beach — Travel by traditional wooden boat along the Volta River, visit Azizakpe Island where your construction work is based, and continue to Maranatha Beach — the breathtaking point where the mighty Volta River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Cape Coast Castle — A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically significant places in West Africa. Walk the underground dungeons and stand at the Door of No Return in a powerful and unforgettable experience.

Kakum National Park and Canopy Walkway — One of only three canopy walkways in Africa — seven suspension bridges stretching 350 metres through ancient rainforest treetops, 40 metres above the ground.

Wli Waterfalls, Volta Region — The highest waterfall in West Africa, 80 metres of spectacular falls deep in the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary. Swim in the natural pool and hike through rainforest.

Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, Volta Region — A community-run sanctuary where wild Mona monkeys roam completely free, climb onto your shoulders, and take food from your hands.
